What is ASHRAE?
ASHRAE is an international society of heating, refrigerating and air-conditioning professionals. Founded in 1894, ASHRAE is dedicated to advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry. Through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s built environment today. ASHRAE was formed as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers by the merger in 1959 of American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE) founded in 1894 and The American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE) founded in 1904.
In 2012, as part of a rebranding, ASHRAE began doing business as “ASHRAE” vs. using its full legal name of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Use of ASHRAE reflects the Society’s worldwide membership and that services will continue evolving globally.
Cedar valley chapter
The Cedar Valley Chapter of ASHRAE covers the eastern corridor of the State of Iowa. The chapter's boundaries include major Iowan cities including Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa City. The Cedar Valley chapter is a proud member of Region VI of ASHRAE.
Our Chapter has served the professional interests of local HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration) engineers since its inception in 1992 by Gary Lange. The chapter is responsible for the continued development and growth of the HVACR industry within the chapter's boundaries. Chapter meetings/events are held every month between September to May. Our chapter meetings consist of a wide variety of activities including:
- Presentations on various topics from industry experts - engineers can gain Professional Development Hours (PDH's) by attending these presentations
- Tours of local buildings and their HVAC systems
- Other fun activities such as mini-golf or curling
In addition to monthly meetings, the chapter also organizes a golf outing every year. The golf outing allows us to raise funds for our chapter and ASHRAE's RP campaign.
Students also have the opportunity to join our chapter and gain access to countless resources including scholarships up to $10,000.
